Last night saw six players meet to contest the yearly Monatgu Cup, last years holder Sam Curtis did not attend so could not defend his title, there was going to be a new name on the trophy this year.
Two groups of three, with 10 minute each way games, plus referees, decided..Group 1 saw Simon Bryan, John Watson & Mark Green play each other…Group 2 had John Turpin, Alex Turpin & Paul Andreas matched up.
Group 1
first up was Simon Bryan V Mark Green, after a goalless first half with excellent defensive work from Mark, there were 3 goals in the second half, Mark took the lead but couldn’t hold on with Simon snatching the winner close to the final whistle..final score 2-1.
the second game saw Simon Bryan V Jonathan Watson, Simon winning 1 – 0 with a goal early in first half, Jonathan tried but couldn’t break down Simon’s strong defence…final score 1-0.
the final group game had Mark Green V Jonathan Watson, with Mark only needing a draw to go through to the semis courtesy of goals scored…a really open game with both players counter attacking each other but the first goal was always going to be crucial and early in the second half Mark calmed his nerves by scoring from an accurate angle, with Jonathan trying to get back into the game, Mark took advantage of the space and finished the game off with another angled drive..final score 2-0.
So Simon & Mark both through to the Semis..
Group 2
First game up saw HHSC’s upcoming youngster Alex Turpin play Paul Andreas, Alex came flying out the traps and scored a brilliant first goal giving the keeper no chance…Alex held the lead up until the last minute of the first half when Paul finally equalised after a build up of pressure on the Turpin Goal..The second half saw Young Turpin go 2-1 up with some excellent one touch passing to get into the shooting zone..But again Andreas came back with the equaliser 3 minutes from time, was there still time for a winner? Yes the winner came in the last minute and it went to Andreas, It was unfair on Alex whom had played some amazing stuff. final score 3-2.
second game was Paul Andreas V John Turpin, an intense game with both players playing hard and focused subbuteo, the first half ending 0-0 to Paul’s disappointment especially after hitting the underside of the bar only for the ball to bounce out..the second half was much the same with John creating some clear cut chances only for Paul’s keeper to save him…half way through the 2nd half Paul eventually put the ball in the net with a tidy angled finish, with time running out John desperately trying to force the equaliser but again Paul’s keeper saving him especially by saving a shot with 10 seconds of the game remaining..final score 1-0.
The last group game saw Alex Turpin V John Turpin, with Alex only needing a draw to go through to the semis, seemed to de focus the player, as can sometimes happen if you know you only need a draw to get through, with John taking a first half 1-0 lead easing his nerves, Alex could not get that elusive equaliser, John relaxed to play some good stuff running out as the 2-0 winner and into the semis. final score 2-0.
Semi Final 1 – John Turpin V Simon Bryan, a very close game with John playing some great stuff to take a 1-0 lead into the break, with Simon shell shocked it looked as if John had done it but with time running out Simon snatched a late equaliser and judging by the Simon’s scream you could see he was relieved, with the game drifting toward extra time, Simon broke clear of the defence and scored a late winner to take him through to the final, unlucky on John who had played a great game..final score 2-1.
Semi Final 2 – Paul Andreas V Mark Green, after a 0-0 first half, both players tried to get the better of their nerves in the second half…Paul eventually got the goal and with solid defending from Paul, Mark could not break into the shooting area to force an equaliser…final score 1-0.
Final – Simon Bryan V Paul Andreas, with Simon favourite due to the fact that Paul had never beaten him..Andreas went into this game with the attitude of “Kill or be Killed” and created two clear cut chances only to have them well saved by the experienced Bryan’s keeper…with the first half ending 0-0.. and Bryan uncharacteristically letting his nerves get to him, Andreas took control of his game and scored a great reverse cut goal to lead 1-0. With Bryan losing possession Andreas kept the ball for long periods of time running down the clock..finally with time running out and into the last minute, Andreas broke into the shooting area and buried the shot into the bottom corner…to claim a famous victory over Simon, his first over the clubs’ number one ranked player..final score 2-0.
Plate final – Alex Turpin V Jonathan Watson, Youngster Alex finally won his first trophy with a 5-0 demolition of the even younger Jonathan, with Alex playing without nerves, really showed why Andreas has tipped him to be one of the clubs top players for the future..well done Alex…final score 5-0.
